Jean Buridan on the Web

small portrait of buridan

Jean Buridan (whose portrait appears to the left) was a philosopher at in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Paris in the 14th century. This website will provide information, research materials, and links to help people work on Buridan, his sources, and his legacy.

A lot more work needs to be done; this website is under construction, too. Stay tuned.

The "De anima" Project

ms picture

This impetus behind this website comes from an international collaborative effort to produce a critical edition and complete translation of Buridan's questions on Aristotle's De anima, to be followed by a volume of interpretive and critical essays, all of which will be published by Fordham Univerity Press. There are three teams at work:

  • The US team:
    • Gyula Klima, Fordham University
    • Peter Sobol, University of Milwaukee
    • Jack Zupko, Emory University
  • The Canadian team:
    • Peter King, The University of Toronto
    • Henrik Lagerlund, University of Western Ontario
    • Claude Panaccio, Université du Québec à Montréal
  • The Dutch team:
    • Paul Bakker, Radbout Universiteit Nijmegen
    • Sander de Boer, Radbout Universiteit Nijmegen
    • Hans Thijssen, Radbout Universiteit Nijmegen

Two thirds of the project (Books 2 and 3) will be based on existing editions and translations, which have already proved their mettle in the two decades they have served specialists of the field. The text editions, however, were based not on all the manuscripts that are available today, and the translations, useful as they were, are also in need of improvement. The new edition and translation will reflect a common, improved understanding of Buridan's doctrine, reflected also in a commonly accepted terminology.
